Ellington, Mingus, & Roach: Fleurette Africaine

A year-end message from the University of Washington School of Music shared winter listening suggestions from faculty. Drummer Ted Poor’s choice was:

Fleurette Africaine (African Flower)

The Mingus riff gives new meaning to the term “double bass.” Much going on in that <4-minute track. Three masters of time.

That this trio recorded an LP was news to me.

The full LP, Money Jungle, was recorded on a single day, September 17, 1962, when Ellington was 63 years old, Mingus was 40, & Roach 38.

Coincidentally, there is a new movie by Eugene Ashe (available on Prime) called Sylvie’s Love, which is set in that time, shining some American light on race and culture.
